Updates from a Wintry Yellowstone! ❄️
Published 16 days ago • 4 min read
Hello Reader,
Just a quick update this month! Jennifer and I recently returned from an incredible Yellowstone Winter trip – easily our favorite workshop of the year. We had a wonderful time with our participants, braving -30 degree temperatures and were rewarded with absolutely beautiful weather (a Yellowstone rarity in winter!). Highlights included a special encounter with the Wapiti wolf pack and, as always, amazing times in the yurts with our fantastic guides.
Below is my favorite image from the trip: a breathtaking ice halo in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, captured on a bitterly cold morning with ice crystals shimmering in the air. See more stunning images from our participants further down!
Things are incredibly busy here! In a little over a week, we're heading back to Death Valley for another workshop with the Death Valley Natural History Association and, we hope, some downtime to explore the park ourselves. Jennifer's also gearing up for the Out of Chicago Live! event this weekend (which she's helping run and also presenting at!). Meanwhile, I'm putting the finishing touches on my "Rethink Landscape Presets and Course" after an incredibly productive beta program, thank you to those who participated! I'm eager to share it with you, but I'm making sure it's absolutely perfect first. I think you'll find it worth the wait!
Warmly, David Kingham and Jennifer Renwick

Upcoming Conferences
Even though our workshops are nearly sold out, you can still learn with us at upcoming conferences! First up, Jennifer will be teaching at Out of Chicago Live!, an awesome online event this weekend! She'll be joining over 50 other amazing instructors for a weekend packed full of inspiration. You can join from anywhere in the world.
Then, later in the year, both Jennifer and I are honored to be presenting in person at the Moab Photography Symposium. We'll be there along with Guy Tal, Colleen Miniuk, Chuck Kimmerle, Charlotte Gibb, Michael Gordon, and Bruce Hucko. This event is a special one for me. It's a smaller, more intimate conference. This conference it focused on creating personally meaningful images and it had a huge impact on my own photography when I first attended. I'm incredibly excited to now be a part of it, and I'd love for you to join us there!
Latest in Nature Photography
🔍 We're always on the lookout for inspiring, informative, and innovative content in the world of photography. Here's what caught our eye this month:
By Sarah Marino Sarah explores creating and photographing ice formations in her backyard during a cold winter in Colorado. She combines her photography skills with techniques shared by a friend, experimenting with angles and light to capture the intricate details of the ice. Using a macro lens and focus stacking, she produces vibrant images that showcase the beauty of these small natural subjects.
By Bruce Percy Photography helps us see our environment more clearly and notice details we often overlook. As we grow as photographers, our relationship with color changes, moving from vivid, dramatic images to more muted, simpler ones. Now, after many years, I've started to reintroduce color, but with a deeper understanding of how to make images feel quieter and more elegant.
From Image to Experience: A Mindful Approach to Photography
By Robert Rodriguez Jr Robert emphasizes that the experience of photography is more important than the images themselves. By practicing mindfulness, we can focus on what we truly see around us instead of getting caught up in distractions and expectations. This shift in perspective allows us to appreciate the beauty in our surroundings and enhances our potential to capture meaningful images.
Workshop Opportunities
We just had one spot open up for our Central Utah workshop in May, you'll want to jump on this quickly!
We just wrapped up an absolutely phenomenal winter workshop in Yellowstone National Park! We were hoping for incredible conditions to focus on landscape photography, and Yellowstone delivered. But it gets even better, we were also treated to up-close views of wolves, not to mention a whole bunch of other amazing wildlife!
We had a truly fantastic group of participants who braved the chilly temperatures and embraced the rustic charm of our yurt accommodations. It takes a special kind of dedication to venture out into the winter wonderland of Yellowstone, and everyone's enthusiasm made the experience even more rewarding. Yellowstone in winter is a special place, and we are so grateful to have experienced it with such an amazing group.
I'm excited to share some of the stunning images from our participants that came out of this unforgettable trip.

I have attended many workshops with David and Jennifer, as well as workshops lead by other photographers. In my experience, David and Jennifer are truly the best in the business. Their attention to detail in the planning, execution, and follow up creates a valuable learning environment for all levels of photographers. The recent winter workshop to Yellowstone National Park was not only the best photography workshop I have participated in, but it was also the best travel experience of my life. I look forward to attending many more workshops with Exploring Exposure. —Keith Lisk

Hello Reader, Happy New Year! We hope you had a fantastic holiday and are ready to dive into some exciting new photography projects! December kept us busy with two workshops in Death Valley, one focused on intimate landscapes and the other on black and white. Check out our participants' inspiring images below! We loved helping them explore new ways of seeing. With limited personal time on this trip, we're eager to return in February. Now back in Denver, we're tackling some big projects. I...
Hello Reader, Greetings from the desert! David and I are enjoying the warmth of the Mojave, where we recently concluded our Death Valley Intimate Landscapes workshop. It was a wonderful experience as participants immersed themselves in the art of seeing and capturing the smaller details and stories within the landscape. We took a well-earned break for Thanksgiving, celebrating the holiday with friends in the desert. We also took time to hike, photograph, and relax. We're eagerly preparing for...
It's been an exciting and incredibly productive autumn travel season for us. Since wrapping up our first Yellowstone workshop, we've traveled over 5,000 miles, exploring new landscapes and chasing the elusive aurora. We've never covered this much ground in such a short time, and though exhaustion is catching up to us, we're grateful for everything we've witnessed and captured along the way. Our Yellowstone small scenes workshop went exceptionally well, with dynamic weather creating endless...
