Updates from Colorado with Wildflowers and Yellowstone under the stars! ๐Ÿ”๏ธ ๐ŸŒผ ๐ŸŒƒ

Hello Reader,

We hope your summer is in full swing with adventures and photography, and we hope those of you experiencing sweltering heat are finding ways to stay cool. We just returned from an extended trip to Grand Teton and Yellowstone for a night photography workshop followed by a workshop in Crested Butte, Colorado. We decided to stay local this summer and explore our home state and all the beauty it encompasses. I've been exploring Crested Butte since 2002, and David has also been photographing it for many years. It's one of our favorite places to visit, hike, and photograph, and we always feel at home when visiting.

The lupine was fantastic this season and lasted longer into July than usual, and our Crested Butte workshop was a fun and exciting experience. We took our group into fields of flowers and up on the alpine roads to the high country in jeeps. The snowpack was still hanging in some areas, so parts of the high country were closed. We still found plenty to explore, with waterfalls, wildflowers, and mountain scenery. After the workshop, we camped at a remote campground outside of Crested Butte and enjoyed paddleboarding and spent time hiking. We summited Mt. Emmons at 12,401 feet, completing my "triple crown" of the three major peaks around Crested Butte. Previously, I summited Mt. Crested Butte, and together we summited Gothic Mountain a few years ago.

We are now back in Denver, busy putting the final touches on our workshop schedule for next year, which we will release soon! We're also excited to announce we're teaching at Out of Chicago Big Sur next year. We can't wait to return to the California coast, an area steeped in landscape photography history.

You can view some of the photos our attendees photographed during the workshops and read about our new magazine release with NPN. Until next time, happy photographing!

Best Wishes,
David and Jennifer

We're always on the lookout for new and exciting things to share with you; here's what we found this month:

โ€‹Seeing for Yourself by Cole Thompsonโ€‹

Cole learned to create for himself in his journey, eschewing the lure of external approval and its accompanying dissatisfaction. Realizing the importance of personal satisfaction in his work, he's been inspired by photographers like Edward Weston and Howard Roark, known for their unique vision and independence. To foster his independent creativity, Cole focuses on understanding his motivations, defining his success, avoiding comparisons, and honing his unique vision.

โ€‹Capturing the Magic: How to Photograph Fireflies and Lightning Bugs by Chrissy Donadiโ€‹

In this article, Chrissy offers a delightful journey into the world of photographing fireflies and lightning bugs. She advises waiting until complete darkness sets in, refraining from using artificial light and deploying photography gear like tripods and wide-angle lenses. With her expert guidance on optimal shutter speed, aperture settings, and post-processing tips, Chrissy provides a comprehensive guide to capturing the ethereal beauty of these luminescent creatures.

โ€‹Zen and the Art of Photography by Krister Bergโ€‹

Photography can be a frustrating experience when the perfect shot eludes us despite our efforts. The story of a bird photographer illustrates the conflict between capturing a photo and embracing the experience. In nature photography, many factors can hinder our ability to take a photo, leading to feelings of disappointment and questioning the purpose of our work. Role models can influence the craving for recognition and validation, and it is important to consider whether they inspire or limit us. Ultimately, we must decide what defines success in our photography practice.

Yosemite: Sanctuary in Stone

We're delighted to highlight an exceptional new coffee table book by esteemed photographer William Neill, titled "Yosemite: Sanctuary in Stone." Now available for pre-order, this volume celebrates Neill's unparalleled ability to capture Yosemite's grandeur through his lens.

We've had the privilege of an early review, which left us in awe. If your heart has a soft spot for Yosemite or you appreciate the finesse of landscape photography, this book is a must-have. "Yosemite: Sanctuary in Stone" transcends being just a book; it's an intimate visual journey into the sublime beauty of Yosemite. Take advantage of this chance to explore the park, as seen through Neill's eyes.

David Interviewed on F-Stop Collaborate and Listen

In the latest F-Stop Collaborate and Listen episode, I enjoyed discussing the powerful impact of niche communities in nature photography. As the owner of the Nature Photographers Network (NPN) and alongside Cody Schultz, the editor for NPN, we discussed the ins and outs of photographic communities, constructive critique, and our exciting new venture - Nature Vision Magazine.

Our conversation explores the essence of community in nature photography, the rewarding experience of being part of one, and the latest enhancements to NPN. We delve into the art of critique and discuss the importance of connecting with our audience.

Be sure to tune in for this and much more as we delve deep into the fascinating world of nature photography!

Captivating Images from Our Yellowstone & Colorado Workshops!

We've had an extraordinary summer hosting two incredible photography workshops. The journey began with a night-time excursion spanning from Grand Teton National Park to the enchanting expanses of Yellowstone National Park. We then traveled back to Colorado, capturing a fantastic wildflower bloom with hillsides blanketed in lupines.

We're thrilled to share a selection of stunning images crafted by our workshop attendees. Their talent and passion truly shone through.

Anticipation is building for our late 2023 and 2024 workshops. Eager to be part of the experience? Register your interest by clicking the button below, and we'll ensure you're among the first to receive our announcement!

Workshop Testimonial

The Crested Butte Wildflowers workshop was the third workshop I have attended with David and Jennifer. All three provided a professional learning experience, not only from a photography perspective, but also from being taken to locations that are off the beaten path that I would never have found on my own. This has real value for me. David and Jennifer complement each other perfectly with their own sets of specialized knowledge. If you have an interest in abstracts, Jennifer is your go-to person. If night landscapes are your thing, David is the expert. Between the two of them, all the bases are covered, including post-processing. I especially enjoy the critique sessions during the workshops, which offer valuable advice and direction to composition skills and post processing. I hope to be able to attend more workshops with David and Jennifer in the future.

Aurora over Glacier

It's been an exciting and incredibly productive autumn travel season for us. Since wrapping up our first Yellowstone workshop, we've traveled over 5,000 miles, exploring new landscapes and chasing the elusive aurora. We've never covered this much ground in such a short time, and though exhaustion is catching up to us, we're grateful for everything we've witnessed and captured along the way. Our Yellowstone small scenes workshop went exceptionally well, with dynamic weather creating endless...

Yellowstone Workshops

Greetings from Yellowstone! We're currently between workshops, having just concluded our Yellowstone Night and Day workshop last week with a wonderful group. It was thrilling to introduce night photography to our participants while also showcasing Yellowstone's daytime beauty during mornings and evenings - a unique aspect of this workshop. We had nearly perfect weather, and although we encountered some smoky skies, the wind fortunately kept most of it at bay during our night sessions. The...

We were able to share some of our favorite high-alpine locations with the group, and you can see a few of the photographs our attendees...
